Arthur Stone Planning and Architectural Design Ltd were delighted to have been engaged to act as both planning consultants and architectural designers of the project which was formally opened by the Provost at a drinks reception. The building will act as a fabulous multi-functional space for exhibitions, weddings, meetings and an extension to the cafe during events.
The design had to sit discretely alongside Listed Balhousie Castle, which houses the museum, to meet the conservation policies of Perth and Kinross Council. A sleek, aluminium clad design evolved using large areas of glazing to achieve a building addition which would not compete with the existing stone building but compliment its structure whilst boasting a separate more contemporary concept.
To ensure the extension opened up inside, to be a light and airy space inside, a series of large cupolas were installed which have really brought the space to life and introduced incredible views of the beautiful mature trees around the site into the building.
The staff and board of trustees are delighted with the building and kicked off the use with an art display and already have weddings and other events booked in over the coming months. Overall, the project will be of real value to the museum moving forwards.
